SUSTAINABLE SYSTEMS – LECTURE 1.

We all are aware of the current global warming situation which is taking a major toll on our environment. Sustainability is the only way to improve this scenario. In this lecture we started by discussing the basics of sustainability.

  • What is a Sustainable System?

Sustainable System is a symbiotic system which maintains integrity and productivity without compromising equilibrium of resources for people or beings with lesser access, and without endangering the natural equilibrium and biotic systems.

We next moved on to breaking these 2 words apart and studying them individually.

  • SUSTAINABLE – Recycling, re-using, impact on environment, balance, longetivity, responsible, awareness, preservation, increase in life, thinking about environment and people, important needs, natural resources, fossil fuels, perrinial sources of energy.
  • SYSTEMS- Process, plan, co-dependent, goal driven, continuous, organising.

Then we started to study about the Goals of Sustainable Development. There are 17 goals a country or a government would have to fulfill in order to achieve sustainable development for the country. It is on this basis that a country might be termed ‘Developed’, ‘Developing’, or ‘Under-Developed’. Below is a list of the set goals –

Conclusion :

By the end of this lecture i learnt the meaning of Sustainable Systems, Sustainable development and the concept of Cradle to Cradle. This helps one observe the sustainable areas in our environment, around us in our locality and the small things, like the role of a raddiwala in being sustainable towards the environment. This makes us more conscious while consuming or using a product and the disposal of the same. Being sustainable not only helps to be aware of our surroundings, it is also being able to conserve the environment and try to find a balance in it.
