INTERGRATIVE SEMINAR 2 – LECTURE 1.

We started off this lecture by discussing fiction – why does one approach it?

There are multiple reasons why people prefer reading fiction over regular novels –

  • sometimes people need to just leave their world and enter someone else’s, to escape reality.
  • People also look for a sense of companionship when they’re lonely or when they’re literally alone. For instance when they’re on a plane or have time at home and the book becomes the companion they pass the hours getting to know. When a person is lonely, the intimacy of books can show him that there are others like him out there.
  • Gaining perspective – is one of the most important reasons people read fiction. Reading about zombies taking over the universe can put your problems in perspective—I mean you literally could be dealing with the end of the world.
  • Another crucial role of fiction is – the experience of places one has not visited. It has the ability to help a person understand a foreign setting or culture without physically travelling.

Being in a design school, since day one our faculties have been telling us to think ‘OUT OF THE BOX’ but nobody knows what’s inside the box in the first place. The only thing we know what they mean by this is to think differently than we usually do – but this may differ from person to person hence we are back to square one.

So to change our thinking style we did an assignment. We wrote an essay/poem on our personal space – our bedroom. We had to explore a new writing style, either narrative, dramatic, personified or something we haven’t tried before. Before we began writing, we discussed different writing styles of various authors, what differed them from one another and how the movies on their books differed from the original plot.

I chose to explore the personified style of writing for my personal space essay since it is something i have never explored before and i feel it will help me look at things from a new perspective.
