STUDIO 2 – Lecture 1.

This class was being taught by Vaibhav sir since our original faculty was unable to make it to class today. We were divided into groups of 6 by our faculty and had to complete an assignment alloted. The faculty gave us a list of words and each group had to pick 1 word from the following list –

  • Serendipity
  • Phenomenon
  • Obnoxious
  • Coherent
  • Incorrigible
  • Inscrutable
  • Trepidation
  • Armistice

The word chosen by my group was Armistice – a temporary suspension of hostilities by agreement of the warring parties; truce. An armistice is a formal agreement of warring parties to stop fighting. It is not necessarily the end of a war, since it may constitute only a cessation of hostilities while an attempt is made to negotiate a lasting peace.

Our task was to find the meaning of the word and synonyms of the same. The word could have more than one meaning. We then found the meaning of the synonyms of the word and made a sentence using the original word and a synonym which fit perfectly.

The synonyms of the words could also have more than one meaning, and we had to find the meaning of each of them in detail. Later, we had to see which synonym fit better in the sentence. After this, find the meaning of the synonym we use in the sentence. This then acts as a new word and we find synonyms for this word as well.

We then researched about the synonyms, their meanings and made a list of the same.

  • Ceasefire- a temporary suspension of fighting; a truce.
  • Suspension- the action of suspending someone or something or the condition of being suspended.
  • Truce- an agreement between enemies or opponents to stop fighting or arguing for a certain time.
  • Treaty- a formally concluded and ratified agreement between states.
  • Pacification- an attempt to create or maintain peace.
  • Conciliation- the action of stopping someone being angry; placation. (AND) the action of mediating between two disputing people or groups.
  • Break- interrupt (a continuity, sequence, or course).
  • Peace- freedom from disturbance; tranquillity (AND) a state or period in which there is no war or a war has ended.
  • Respite- a short period of rest or relief from something difficult or unpleasant.
  • Lull- calm or send to sleep, typically with soothing sounds or movements (AND) a temporary interval of quiet or lack of activity.
  • Let-up- a pause or reduction in the intensity of something dangerous, difficult, or tiring.
  • Moratorium- a temporary prohibition of an activity.

We then framed sentences that would suit the word best. This is what we came up with :

  • World War I ended with the armistice of 1918.
  • Another sentence- World War II ended with the armistice of 22 June 1940.

The synonyms of armistice we replaced in the above sentence was treaty and truce.

  • World War I ended with the treaty of 1918.
  • World War I ended with the truce of 1918.

In conclusion – the synonyms that fit well in the sentences are –

  • truce
  • treaty
  • pacification
  • respite
  • ceasefire
  • moratorium

For the second part of the assignment we chose the word Treaty since it’s meaning is the closest to the original word.

Then we listed the synonyms of the word treaty –

  • contract
  • accord
  • alliance
  • arrangement
  • bargain
  • bond
  • cartel
  • charter
  • compact
  • concord
  • concordat
  • convention
  • covenant
  • deal
  • entente
  • league
  • negotiation
  • pact
  • reconciliation
  • sanction
  • settlement
  • understanding

Next we had to perform a small skit in front of the whole class depicting the word and they had to guess what the word was.We decided to enact a war scene which would end with one party waving a white flag to show peace leading to truce. My team members were – Yuvraj, Rya, Apeksha and Anandita.

Conclusion – This exercise helped me to understand what words fit right in a sentences, the application of our thoughts while performing the skit, teamwork, various perspectives of a single scenario and how to do the final execution in the best way so that the class would guess our word easily.
